Friends!

"No one can be a friend to anyone sister, you dont know still" . This was the reaction of 15 year old ammu when i asked her about her friends! She was not representing a teeneger hanging out in CCDs , wearing branded jeans , bright T-shrit with catchy writings and a bag hanging way below the knee. Her apartment is not a three bed room flat in gandhi nagar and both her parents are not working. She doesnt freak out , may it be movies or may it be maths!
Are you able to relate to ammu, can you imagine her? Finding it difficult right?
Even i found it very difficult until i actually saw her in the 'Government Remand home for Girls'.
Its a place where the socially victimised girls below the age of 18 are brought after being rescued by the police.

A place where you get the see some otherwise unseen faces. Some 3 girls who were abandoned by their families for being mentally challenged are mixed up in this crowd of 117. They were smiling , infact they were constantly smiling at me when i went there.

However ammu who brought me tea while i was waiting in their office room never smiled at me.
And she was the one who gave me that 'never before heard' answer about friendship. I did not react. Infact i didn know how to. May be she is right!

Surround by people with whom she has compete for using anything from toilet to toilet soap , with whom she has to adjust 24*7 for the reason of no choice, behind whom she has to wait in long queue for getting her plate of food, besides whom she has to sleep in congested room how can she be a friend?

Its nice to have friends who send sms, greet over a e-card,drops down once in a while, meets over the weekend. But how to find a friend in a person with whom you need to compete for survival?

I spoke to them, yes i spoke to all the 117 of them including those three delightful faces sitting in the left corner. I told them to read the books from the library we had set up for them. We spoke about movies to mullah stories, kadhalil viludhen to Kalam effect , career to coffee.
When i asked about their talents , leela said "we can sing, dance and shout(!?)". Did you ever know that shouting is a talent. Know it now. Oh god! They shouted to blow off the roof up to the sky. Amazing girls!

I was curious and asked leela about her friends. Without a minute of hesitation she said, "No one can be a friend to anyone sister, you dont know still".

Women in 2020: Strengthen the roots

What are women in(rural) India today aspiring to? Are they aspiring to be homemakers?
Or are they aspiring to realize their dreams? Are they even free to dream?! Or do they believe that dreaming is hopeless in a land where their dreams will never take flight? Do they passively give into societal censure, parental and monetary restrictions? Or do they voice their hopes and wishes? Do they even have a voice?!

Do our rural women have the power to give themselves the hope of a better life?
That’s a difficult question to answer. It all boils down to education. The situation is quite dismal since for every 100 girls that enroll in Schools in rural India, only
eighteen reach class 8, only nine reach class 10 and just one reaches class 12.
Well it’s the time to think of some probable solutions. Understanding the psyche of the rural poor, a monetary incentive (of say a 100 rupees a month) for every girl child that goes to school and an additional Cash Prize for a girl who appears for the exams and passes, can bring about a substantial increase in female child enrollments in schools. Additional stress needs to be laid upon women entering the science streams(medicine, engineering, automotives etc) rather than just the traditional domains that women have been in for the past centuries. The manufacturing companies or industries that encourage the count of women employees should be given some tax benefits. Women need to be motivated
to pursue their studies and subsequently their careers. This can also be initiated at
the rural level. Strong self-sufficient women and women entrepreneurs from villages which are in proximity to a said village can be given good mileage. Locals will easily identify with these known individuals who were in similar situations and who have masterfully handled their strife and struggles by turning to education and its
benefits. These local role-models can be a part of the school curriculum to help,
guide, motivate and give the female students a realistic, achievable goal. To include such activities in the curriculum, can be made mandatory by the government. It may be a long while before the rural men accept their women as bread-winners
but it won’t be too long before the men start recognizing their women as potential financial contributors, in addition to their role of contributing to the welfare of the children and the home. We long to see the day when a rural woman managing her
home and her career is seen as a norm rather than just the odd exception.

Only with a remarkable role played by women we can achieve the vision 2020.
Because India’s Future lies in her villages and India’s strength lies in her Women.

Dream comes true!

We were told before a week that India Vision Partner organisations have got an opportunity to meet Dr.Kalam and he has given an appointment at eleven. The excitement and anxiety was crossing its thresholds and we were all set to meet our source of inspiration. The first surprise news that came was the meeting was not 11.am but at 11.pm!!
Twelve of us from all the Partner organisations like Suyam, Inda Sudar, Dream India, Team Everest, Nandanar Trust, Manam Malarattum, and Young Helping Minds assembled near RajBhavan gate at 9.00pm and it was wonderful to meet lot of like minded people.
To be present inside rajbhavan itself was feeling so great. We were fully charged and waiting for "D Moment". And finally we were called inside. As Dr Kalam was busy with various meetings, we were called inside at 12 midnight he spent with us till 1 am. He was very fresh and very enthusiastic in meeting our India Vision team.
I don't think I will be able to capture in words what we felt as soon as we saw him. It's beyond words and languages.
We could all feel his presence. In fact that was the moment when we realized the significant impact he has created in us.
The one thing that kept me thinking was his sincerity. All the seven partner organisations handed over their 'brieft note' of their activities. He went through these notes carefully. He said that he has got a lot of homework from us (!) and he has to work on it to us give directions. We understood that here is where the depth in his words comes from. When he says "Dream" it doesn't sound ordinary but its so vibrant and energetic and that's because and mind effort he puts behind it.
Now this meeting has invoked a lot of responsibility in us. We can thank for his time shared with us only by doing more for the society. We should touch as many lives as possible and try to bring smiles on their faces as he said.

Fire in the mountain run run run !!

The weekend events were great fun. The active participation of many volunteers made it all the more colourful.
In the event at crest we encouraged the students to be regular to school and actively participate in games etc.
We played a lot with them and sandwiched these thoughts in between the games.

In NELE it was awesome fun to play with the kids and conduct painting competition for them.
It was a great feeling that we could actually bring smile on their faces just by our presence.
It was good opportunity for us as well to revive and revisit our drawing skills :) !

Tanjore painting

I Cant exactly remember when did i see the first tanjore painting . I have a great fascination and liking for them. The bright colours , sharp features , embossed with gold and semi precious stones . . . . they just appeal to all my asthetic senses of beauty.

I think this liking should have got built over a period of time. The images of the hindu temples like thiruveeteswaran kovil , parthasarathy kovil etc surrounding my house should have created this love for tanjore paintings in me. Infact its the first thing that strikes to my mind when i think of buying a gift to some one. The rasi handloom shop in mylapore is one place which can be visited just for the great fragrance it has. It also showcases few wonderful tanjore paintings . Mostly the very regular classical ones.

I always imagine a house which has a dark brown well crafted wooden furniture in the hall . A beautiful "Unjal" with elephants on the golden chain on the four sides holding it placed in the center.

White walls with huge tanjore painiting in the center . Some green plants at the side. Sum total all that i want to say is i loveeeeeeeeeee tanjore paintings :)

Still Learning..

This Saturday i had been to swanthana. There were a lot of kids . The cute little ones whose smile is worth millions. These girls are abandoned by their parents for multiple reasons. They are challenged in many ways by the creator. I went there just to spend some time however i happen to learn something which will be a leason for me for my life.

As soon as i entered there was girl who came running towards me shouting "akkkaaaa !!!" , she tried to show me something written in a paper. I could only read what was written in that paper and not what was there in her beautiful mind. I was received like i was known to them from ages. I met the sister had a word with her and came back to the hall where each one of them had a place in some corner . They were trying to grab my attention by loudly smiling , doing some action and waving hands towards me. And few were smart enough to move their wheel chair slowly towards me and didn want to wait for me to look at them. Everyone tried to convey some information to me from the world in which they live. All that i could understand was that they were really very happy to find someone to hear.

We kept chit chatting . They were talking something that i didn understand and i was also talking something which i am sure they might not have understood. But we were in a plane of thoughts and we could read each others mind. We may not have followed what was being said but the unsaid was quite clear to us.

Someone wanted my bright green bangle and someone was already dancing with my kalamkari printed dupatta. Suddenly some noise made me turn and i saw hema had slipped down from her special cycle. She is a 4 year old girl who cannot speak or hear and also mentally challenged. She took some time to realise that she was facing the sky with her legs were raised above her knees. Immediately she started crying aloud. I ran towards her , took her into my arms and was trying to tell her that nothing much happened. I myself was a bit scared as i did not understand how to console her. Now she started to cry in intervals . Sleeping for sometime suddenly getting up and crying and slowing closing her eye lids and again going back to sleep.

After sometime she woke up and when she became really silent i was very happy . Now suddenly something irked me so badly in my left arm and i screamed in pain. It was so sudden that tears started rolling out of my eyes. May be because of the shock or pain i don't know. I could see that it was hema who bit me and she went back to sleep in the same arms very peacefully.

For a moment i didn know how to react. I was helpless and was left clueless why did she do that to me. However i could not react in anyway because i know her state. This dragged me into thoughts for the rest of the week. Most of the time i expect people to react to me in a specific way for various reasons. I break my heads thinking why cant they be good to me for all that i have done to them. Hema thought me an answer that day. She actually thought me an important lesson for my lesson for life which i would have never learnt otherwise.

Each one has reason to react in their own way. Its left to us as to how we want to take it and proceed. We can over react, discontinue their relationship , scold , remain calm , try to become god etc.,

What we still cannot do is to expect some one to be ideally a person whom we have imagined in our minds. Thanks a lot da hema kutty i will never forget you in my life.
